鎌倉彫は800年の歴史と伝統を持っています。彫漆（ちょうしつ）といわれる技法は、生地に漆を何層にも重ね塗りして数ミリの厚さにして乾燥させ、それに精緻な彫刻をしてゆきます。その技法は、古くは中国の宋の時代に日本に仏教の禅宗とともに伝わったといわれています。

日本では、木にあらかじめ彫刻をして、その生地に何層にも漆（うるし）を重ね塗りして、それぞれの工程で磨きをかけて美しさを出していきます。

鎌倉彫とは、仏師「運慶」に端を発した、工芸品の域に留まらない美術品なのです。

鎌倉彫協同組合には36名の組合員が所属しています。また教授会には18名のマスターがいます。脈々と伝統が引き継がれています。その技術は内外から高い評価を得ています。

The Kamakura Bori Wood Carving has a long history and the tradition as 900 years. It's method named "Chousitu" is painting Japanese Lacquer (japan) for many layers after drying by each to be a few millimeters on a material and carving it by chisels. 

It has been handed that this method had come to Japan from China in the Sou age in thirteenth century along with the Zen Buddhism.

In Japan, Carving on a material beforehand in a times, and paint Japanese Lacquers on it and brush up on a surface to make it to be an artwork.

The Kamakura Bori Wood Carving means the Artwork  began in the Kamakura age by "UNKEI" the famous sculptor of Buddhist statues over than a craft.

There are 36 members belonged the Kamamura Bori Wood Carving Cooperative Association, and 18 masters in the masters committee. They are keeping the traditional skills and the quality, and are highly evaluated.
